The start of SCT can be traced back to a single event.
On the 23rd February, a Virgin West Coast Pendolino service was travelling from London Euston to Glasgow Central. Just after 8.15 in the evening, the train passed a faulty set of points immediately after the Docker Viaduct. As the first coach left the rail, the train began rocking and swaying violently, leading to the remaining eight coaches derailing and coming to rest in the adjacent field.
Over 500 rescuers attended the scene, along with 12 ambulances and 5 fire engines. The accident resulted in over 80% of the passengers being injured and there was 1 fatality.
A contributing factor into this horrific accident was loss of track gauge due to the nuts and bolts that affix the stretcher bars to the switch rails being loose or missing. To improve the safety of their most critical assets, Network Rail approached the University of Huddersfield, asking them to develop a low-cost monitoring solution. From this, Smart Component Technologies and the Smart Washer was born.
